How to build a website with AI: a step-by-step guide for business owners
You can build a good business website with AI yourself, in days rather than weeks. The AI writes the code and much of the first draft; you bring what it cannot know: who your customers are and what they need to see before they call or buy. Here is the order that works, and the steps people usually skip.
Before you open any tool
- Who the site is for, and the one thing a visitor should do: call, book, buy or ask for a quote.
- The pages you need. Usually home, services, about and contact, plus one page for each service you want to be found for.
- Your real text, photos and prices. AI fills gaps well, but generic text wins few customers.
- A domain name, registered in your own name.
Choose how you will build it
| AI website builder | AI app builder (Lovable, Bolt, v0) | Coding assistant (Claude Code) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | A simple site, fast | A site with custom features | A site you will keep growing for years |
| Who holds the code | The platform | You, once you export it | You, from the start |
| Changes later | In the editor, within its limits | With prompts, paid in credits | Anything, in your own project |
| Hosting | On the platform | The platform or your own | Wherever you choose |

The steps
Describe the site in one brief
Who it is for, the pages, the tone, two or three sites you like, and your real content. Give the AI this brief, not a one-line prompt.
Generate, then edit page by page
First the structure and design, then the text of each page. Rewrite in your own words anything that sounds like it could be on any other site.
Make it work on phones
Most visitors arrive on a phone. Check every page at phone width, including menus, forms and buttons.
Set up the basics for search
A unique title and description for each page, one main heading, readable addresses such as /services/repair rather than /page-3, and a short description on every image.
Connect forms and analytics
Send a test message through every form and make sure it arrives where it should. Add analytics so you can see where visitors come from.
Connect your domain and publish
Point your domain at the new site and check it opens over HTTPS. If it replaces an old site, redirect the old addresses to the new ones.
Mistakes that cost you later
- The domain or hosting registered in someone else's name.
- Generic AI text that sounds like every other site in your field.
- Old page addresses changed without redirects, so the new site loses the rankings the old one had.
- A contact form nobody tested, quietly losing enquiries.
- A site only the platform's editor can change, with no way to take it with you.
When it is worth getting help
- You are replacing a site that already brings customers from search.
- You need bookings, payments or customer accounts.
- You want to keep changing the site yourself with AI, without breaking it.
Frequently asked questions
Can AI build a whole website by itself?
It can produce a complete first version in minutes. The content that wins customers — your offer, your proof, your prices — still has to come from you.
Which AI tool is best for a small business website?
For a simple site you will rarely change, an AI website builder is enough. If you want custom features or plan to grow the site for years, a coding assistant on your own project gives you far more room.
Will a website built with AI rank in Google?
Google ranks pages on how useful they are, not on how the code was written. What matters is real content, speed, a good phone layout, and a clear title and description on every page.
How much does it cost?
The tool's subscription, the domain and the hosting. Many small sites run on free or low-cost hosting tiers; check the tools' current prices before you start.
Can I move my existing site instead of starting over?
Yes. We have guides for moving off Tilda, Wix and WordPress, linked from the website rebuild page.
